About Project 365

Thanks for stopping by my blog! This is Year 2 of my Project365 blog. What is a Project 365? It's a photo challenge involving people from all over the world posting one photo per day throughout 2011. Some photographers choose themes, however for now my photos will be totally random. I will be shooting with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi-18-55mm, 75-300mm zoom and 100mm 2.8 macro lenses. I edit in iPhoto and Photoshop Elements 9. Not all photos are "perfect"; the purpose is to make photography an everyday event.

I am not a professional. Photography has always been a diversion of mine. I am a primary grade teacher and passionate tech. enthusiast. I consider myself an experienced amateur with LOTS to learn!

You will find links to other photographers in the sidebar- do check them out! I have also joined the Flickr EdTech 365/2011 Group, and you can click this link to view the entire pool. I will be posting my photos to their group pool, as well as here on my photo blog. I welcome your constructive criticism!

Guidelines

1. Photos are to be taken in 2011.
2. Post your own work only.
3. Images may be edited or unedited- your choice.
4. Keep your images, text, and comments appropriate for all ages.
5. HAVE FUN!

Day 89- Philodendron

We own a huge philodendron plant. Very hardy- takes a lot to harm one of these plants. They are beautiful with the sun shining through the leaves. Just wish they didn't collect as much dust!

Day 88- Emerged

Just over a week ago my class' Journey North tulip garden began to poke through the snow in our garden bed. I love this project-based learning experience as my class is able to integrate science, writing, technology, and more with good old-fashioned gardening! The next benchmark will be when the tulips bloom. Then we can also dig up the accompanying time capsule that we buried nearby. Now if only there wasn't that pesky, predicted Nor'easter later this week. Let's hope these tulips are hardy!

Day 87- Spring Color

Someone brought a bouquet of flowers into the teacher's room Love that touch of spring!

Day 86- Scraggily

This shot was actually taken on a sunny afternoon with crystal blue sky in the background. I was attracted to the scraggily branches that reached up. While processing it in PSE9, I tried an effect called Fresco, which almost made it look more like a painting than a photo! Think I like it, though!

Day 85- Horsin' Around

Went out for a walk with a friend today and stopped to check out this horse and his buddy in the corral. He seemed pretty friendly, ready to stick his whole body through the fence!

Day 84- BUMP

It's that time of year again- frost heave season! Roads have giant dips and crests in places they don't normally in warmer weather. Thank goodness for these bright orange "BUMP" signs beside the roads. Many a vehicle's suspension system has been saved, thanks to them. As an aside, just after I shot this, a pick-up came zooming past me, but failed to take note of the sign. A creaking sound emitted from his truck as drove over the large dip in the road. These signs only help if you read them!

Day 83- Barking Up the Wrong Tree?

I'd been seeing bark strips on the ground around some of our cedar trees for a few months now, but didn't really think much of it until today. I was a bit surprised to see these giant gashes in the bark that continued quite a ways up. More strips lay at the base. Not totally sure, but I'm thinking porcupines. Anyone?

Day 82- Sap's Running

What's beginning to become an annual ritual- my husband has tapped several of our maple trees again. The sap is running freely, and is getting boiled down each evening over our woodstove. Should be plenty of syrup this spring!

Day 81- Fluffy

My CoCoRaHS rain gauge was so overflowing with fluffy snow this morning... it almost looked more like popcorn!

Day 80- Winter's Revenge

So on Saturday my shot was crocuses. Then... there was today. Seems as though Old Man Winter was playing a cruel joke on Mother Nature. (Some of you may remember a vintage commercial from the 1970's with the line, "it's not nice to fool Mother Nature!") Although I love shooting macro snowflakes, I truly hope this is the last until next winter!

Day 79- Super Moon

I shot my first photos in RAW format last night. It was the well-advertised "Super Moon" that reportedly appeared 14% bigger than the average full moon. Apparently it has something to do with it being a perigee moon- the biggest in 18 years. My daughter and I looked all around town for the best vantage point. Finally we hunkered down at a town park overlooking the ocean. There were lots of other locals there too- almost a party-like atmosphere! It was a beautiful cream-color, and I liked the shot with the reflection over the water the best. I'm still not totally satisfied with my moon-shooting abilities, but I guess I'll just have to keep practicing!

Day 78- Flowers Finally!

I was excited yesterday to find that crocuses had finally begun blooming along our school foundation. So happy to see color bursting onto the soon-to-be-spring scene!

Day 77- Umbrellas

We had an inservice day today, spending most of the morning in district meetings at the high school. As part of an art display these colorful umbrellas are currently hanging in the student gallery area. Unusual, but fun!

Day 76- Top O' the Mornin'!

St. Patrick's Day is one of those days that it's just fun to pretend you have some Irish in you! I have not an ounce (so far as my genealogical pursuits have proved thus far), but I love Celtic music and dance. I brought a cd in today and played some Celtic music for my class as they came in. Each week we produce a podcast for families detailing the week's happenings. I usually just use stock Garageband "jingles", but decided to import some of the Celtic tunes as our background music. It was a fun day! And some day (when I can afford to retire) visiting Ireland is definitely on my "bucket list"!

Day 75- Macro Lilac Bud

Spring starts on Sunday, and here's proof that my lilacs are preparing- a bud!

Day 74- Nappy Time!

Poor Graham. My poor cat has had a rough day... of sleeping. Why not relax by... doing more sleeping!

Day 73- Macro Tulip

Now for a macro shot inside one of those gorgeous purple tulips from Friday!

Day 72- Daylight Savings

Both of the time changes (daylight savings and standard time) throw off my body clock for almost 2 weeks until I've adjusted. However, of the two choices, I am a much bigger fan of gaining an hour versus losing it! (Added the Lens Flare effect from PSE9.)

Day 71- Hanging On Until Spring

Bought this cute ceramic plant pot today, with the cute bunny that hangs off the side. It was an excellent bargain, and it will look great holding yesterday's purple tulips!

Day 70- Purple Tulip

We had a "pay day breakfast" at school today, put on by one of the grade levels. They went all out with door prizes of potted tulips. I usually never win anything, but my luck changed for the better! At least there's color indoors!

Day 69- I See You!

Was taking a macro shot of the redesigned nickels, and thought it might be fun to give Thomas Jefferson some color to his eyes! Apparently the belief is that his eyes were actually blue, gray, or brown. As you can see, I opted for version of hazel instead! Just think of it like those cool contact lens that change the color of your eyes!

Day 68- Riding the Bus

Our school district offered transportation to this afternoon's professional development (held at one of our outlying "sister schools". Only 5 of us took advantage of it, though, which seemed like a big waste. Most people took their own vehicles, or carpooled. Kind of sad to see a big bus so empty!

Day 67- Limbo

Today's Daily Shoot- #ds478- Make a feeling that conveys a sense of being outdoors today. This is what waning winter looks like here. We're caught in limbo between a great deal of remaining ice and snow, and the approach of mud season. I captured this on our school playground. It's not pretty, but sadly it's what being outdoors this time of year is all about.

Day 66- Winter Warm-up

I couldn't post this last night as the cable went down (argh). Our school secretary put these beautiful flowers out on her desk yesterday. Who needs the furnace? This is enough spring color to warm us all up!

Day 65- Be Sociable

Many of you heard all about cleaning out at my mom's house during much of the fall. This was a Pepsi-Cola bottle we found there, presumably from about 1960. (I cleaned it up a bit in PSE9.) I got curious as to what Pepsi marketing looked like back then. I shouldn't have been surprised to find a number of old vintage commercials posted online, as well as a timeline of Pepsi slogans. Pepsi-Cola marketed this soft drink with "Be Sociable" from 1953-1961. It's interesting to look back and see how products have been promoted over time.

Day 64- Winter Road

I went out for a walk this afternoon, since it was about 20 degrees warmer than yesterday. I hate this time of year. The snow is tinged with brown everywhere. After a few storms where the rain froze solid, there is dangerous ice everywhere, making a daily walk dangerous, if not impossible. Potholes provide obstacles on just about every road. I am just ready for it all to be done! I processed this with an effect called "Sumi-e". I thought it made it look more abstract.

Day 63- Glowing Trees

Caught this shot out one of my classroom windows at the end of the day. The sky was so dark behind the trees, but the sun had just come out and lit up the trees against the dark background. I'm afraid this shot doesn't do justice to how it looked in "real time".

Day 62- Estuary

Got out early and snapped this shot of a nearby estuary. It was cold, hence the ice chunks in the salt water. However, the fact that it was this sunny at 7:30am. thrills me to no end! Bring on that equinox!

Day 61- Back to the Dentist

It was back to the dentist again. Always seems to provoke some amount of apprehension, no matter how I try to squelch it. (Can't turn off the bad dental memories from childhood.) Luckily, the dental staff is pleasant and upbeat, and my dentist is a very down-to-earth, humorous guy. No cavities this time, so it's all good! Break out the new brush!

Day 60- Repetition

Today's Daily Shoot- #ds471- Find a repeating pattern today and make a photograph of it. Nothing special- just a spiral-bound index card book.
